Four versions of The Scream exist.
One sold on Wednesday for $120 million, two others were stolen in 2004. Describing his haunting vision, Munch wrote this poem,
“I was walking along the road with two Friends / the Sun was setting – The Sky turned a bloody red / And I felt a whiff of Melancholy – I stood / Still, deathly tired – over the blue-black / Fjord and City hung Blood and Tongues of Fire / My Friends walked on – I remained behind / – shivering with Anxiety – I felt the great Scream in Nature – EM.”![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh28ejnobXXQVKUT6LOlONNZxb-gQFJOUuCXEat8cY9Sf2sq3m22n6_uDdz_OuZOLGPh5K0zFyVmnWcDjydGq6Md8zUt1akX99qeH0IlqXaR0sH5jFv0nWUv1iAA3lQS0mTSBcyJZpLDqdX/s400/Munach+Scream.jpg)

There is also a theory that the red sky of Munch's painting was inspired by the echoes of the Krakatoa eruption! I've been fortunate enough to see two of the existing Screams.
